I'm not a Churchward researcher, but for those who are, there is an interesting entry in the book MARRIAGES and DEATHS From THE NEW YORKER (Double Quarto Edition) 1836 - 1841, by Kenneth Scott (Washington, D. C.: National Geographic Society, 1980), on page 28:
(Deaths section)
"Churchward, George, a commission merchant, shot and killed 19 Mar. in Mobile by C. B. Churchill, a cottonbroker -- 30 Mar. 1839 [edition]"
