We are trying to find information about SYDNEY CHURCHWARD, born 8 April 1892 in Buckfastleigh (Devonshire, UK). We know that he must have emigrated to Canada, for in September 1916 he enlisted in TORONTO to fight in the Great War. His trade in Toronto was : policeman, and he was married to Sadie Churchward. His address : 236 Weston Road, Toronto. He was killed in action in Passendale (near Ypres, Belgium) as a soldier of the 3rd Battalion, on 6 Nov 1917. His body never having been found he was reported as missing. The reason that we are interested in this person : On 2 February 2002, we (the DIGGERS, a team of Belgian battlefield archaeologists) unearthed the remains of 3 Canadian soldiers in Passendale. We have reason to believe (though there is not 100 procent certainty yet) that one of the soldiers was Sydney Churchward. Whether this soldier will be reburied later this year as an Unknown Soldier may largely depend on responses to our query. So it is clear that any messages responding to our question will be highly appreciated. Thanks. Aurel Sercu Spokesman The Diggers www.diggers.be Notify Administrator about this message?
