Hi Michael I was just browsing some of my ancestors names and came across this site.
My link to the Churchwards of Stoke Gabriel is through Marye Churchward (20 Aug 1642) 10 generations ago when she married Thomas Snelling on the 4 Nov 1656.
Marye's father was Jacobi Churchward 28 Oct 1610 Stoke Gabriel. (apparently the priest knew latin and thought it would be great to latinise "James" on the records).
Jacobi's father was also named James 15 feb 1589 Stoke Gabriel and his father was James Churchward also 17 Aug 1565 of Stoke Gabriel.
Apparently the next father was James and his father Thomas but I am not sure of the last 2.
Well I live in Brisbane Australia and my parents immigrated after I was conceived in England.
My Mother's family line are strewn throughout all of Devon so I am sure there are a few more links through marriage. it would be great to touch base with you about your family line.
