Jean, I am descended from this William's younger brother Benjamin, so I have some info on their ancestry. The work was done by a cousin who got most of her info from Churchill Family in America. I confirmed some of it from Savage, James: The Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England. Boston, 1860-1862 p387
William is the son of William Churchill, b. 1656 in Plymouth MA and Lydia Bryant, b. October 23, 1662 also in Plymouth. (I don't know relationship of Lydia Bryant to Ruth Bryant who married your William Churchill, but I suspect there is one.)
William Churchill, b. 1656, is son of John Churchill, "the immigrant" born date unknown in England, and Hannah Pontus, daughter of William Pontus, who died February 9, 1651/52 in Plymouth, ("RECORDS OF PLYMOUTH COLONY 1633-1689 edited by N.B. Shurtleff. Pontus, William from parish Dover, Kent going to Plymouth, Mass - no ship listed.

Hope this helps
