Many thanks for the info. Samuel's daughter Amelia was my wife's ggmother. I have traced the line back as far as Samuel & Eliza (Graves) but can't get any further. I have a marriage reference of Samuel JOYCE Churchill & Eliza Jane Graves (Pallots index) but there are several inconsistencies. Amelia's marriage cert (1873) shows Samuel as a valet - unlikely for a labourer - also the death cert (again Samuel Joyce of 1865) shows him as a greengrocer. I don't know if it was customary to name the father on the marriage cert if he was deceased.
I will have to visit the London Metropolitan Archives to see if I can find more info.
