There is only one Eldredge in "Churchill Family in America," and it appears likely that he is the father of the Nelson Bains Churchill that you are descended from. If so, you are indeed in the Connecticut branch of the Churchills, descended from Josiah of Wethersfield, Connecticut. Eldredge, no. 231 in the Connecticut branch of "Churchill Family in America" (CFA), is the sixth of seven children of Sage and Elizabeth Churchill. Eldredge is of the seventh generation in this country. While his birth date is not known, his next older sibling was born November 18, 1796. He thus would have been of the right age to be the father of Nelson Baines. The information on Eldredge came to CFA from the eldest son of an older sister of Eldredge. CFA says, "Mr. James E. Lindsay wrote in 1890 that his uncle Eldredge died a few years before, leaving two sons, John M., then living in Marysville, Mo., and N.B., then at Florence, No. Dakota." Sage and Elizabeth Churchill moved from Berlin, Connecticut, to Cornwall, Vermont, where they lived until 1800, when they moved to Elizabethtown, New York. They were part of a large-scale movement of Connecticut Churchills to Vermont and then were among the first of them to depart Vermont. The last four of Sage and Elizabeth's seven children were born at Cornwall. This includes Eldredge, of course. Sage died relatively young, on February 27, 1813. Although one of his sons died young and for two other sons there is no record beyond their names, three of the remaining four children moved west. Eldredge's brother Jesse served with distinction in the War of 1812, and Jesse's son Jerome joined the California gold rush and became wealthy as a merchant, then a banker, rancher, and railroad man. The line of descent for Eldredge and his sons is the immigant Josiah of Wethersfield, Joseph, oldest son Nathaniel in the third generation, oldest son Nathaniel in the fourth generation, oldest son Nathaniel in the fifth generation, and Sage in the sixth generation. I have no further information on either Eldredge or his son N.B., but if you conclude that Eldredge's son N.B. is Nelson Bains, for an extensive history of the earlier generations I would recommend my book "A Family Odyssey, the Connecticut Churchills and the Settling of America 1635-1900."
