My response to your message will not answer your question, and will surely deepen the mystery. Eliezer (your spelling) Churchill is one of my ancestors. I am aware of the sources you quoted, but was unaware of the conflict with Samuel Hatch. I was already aware of another conflict which is directly related. I hope the information I possess might put you on the right track. I too am aware of the statement that Mary was the daughter of Edward and Faith. However, another source indicates she wasn't the daughter of a Doty at all. That source says she was the widow of a Doty. Her maiden name remains unknown. Here's my source and a direct quote (my added notes enclosed): James Savage "Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England" originally published 1890-1892 and reprinted by the Genealogical Publishing Comnpany 1998. In Volume I, at page 386, under the heading "Churchill" it says in part "...Eliezur, Plymouth s. (son) of John of the same, m. (married) 8 Feb. 1688, Mary Dotey, wid. (widow) I presume, of some gr.s. (grandson) of the first Edward (meaning Edward Doty), and had four or five ch. (children)...." Savage goes on to list the children of Eliezur's first marriage to the other Mary. If Savage is correct, there would have been two Mary Dotys, in the same approximate time period, which could have caused later researchers some confusion. Obviously, this is only supposition. Maybe someone else knows something that might help to unravel this further.
