Armistead Churchill, son of Armistead and Hannah Churchill, served as Colonel of the 2nd Battalion in the Revolutionary War. It seems that John may have also served in the Rev. War. In 1776, John received 1000 acres of land in the district of Ken. in 1793, Samuel Churchill received a military grant for 1000 acres of land in Sumner Co. TN. Samuel is the son of Armistead, Jr. and Elizabeth.

"Virginians Along and Near the Lower Rappahannock River, 1607 - 1799"
1787 Armistead Churchill Jr. and Elizabeth Churchill (nee Blackwell of Fauquier Co.) emigrated from Middlesex Co. to the Louisville, Kentucky, area in 1787 (he was the son of the Honorable Armistead Churchill and Hannah Harrison Churchill). Armistead and Elizabeth had a son Samuel Churchill, whoose sons John R. Churchill and William Henry Churchill leased some land to their nephew Meriwether Lewis Clark, who established the Louisville Jockey Club (alias Louisville Roll Tract) and the Kentucky Derby. The New York Sporting Journal referred to the racetrack as Churchill Downs in 1886, but the new name did not become official until 1928.

Henry Churchill, born Dec. 10, 1768; died Sept. 28, 1842, son of Armistead and Elizabeth (Blackwell) married Penelope (Pope) Oldham, daughter of Col. William Pope and Penelope (Edwards) of Louisville, Ky... and widow of Col. William Oldham, killed Nov. 1791. Penelope was born Feb. 12, 1769 and died Sept. 16, 1821.

John Churchill, born 1767; married Matilda Slaughter, daughter of Cadvalador and Margaret (Ranedell) on April 18, 1789.

Samuel married Abby Oldham, daughter of Col. William Oldham.

There is a record that shows Nathaniel Harrison Churchill received land in GA on April 2, 1793. It would seem that he has to fit it with this family somewhere.
