Charles Churchill Jr. North Carolina

Hi, I wanted to toss out some ideas concerning Charles to receive input and discussion from the group.

Charles son of Capt Charles and Lydia Belden Churchill b. May 3, 1755 is my 4th great grandfather and over the years have been searching for whatever information I could find about him and his family. I have a copy of "The Churchill Family in America" by Gardner Asaph and Nathaniel Wiley Churchill and over the years I as well as other researchers have accepted the date of his death to be 16 Sept. 1818 as reported in the book. However, I recently received a photocopy of a newspaper article from Doug Baker(a researcher on the Lowthorp Line for Charles' wife Mary). The copy is noted as being from the Carolina Federal Republican ( New Bern, NC) dated Saturday 18 Sept. 1813. The paper has a couple of pieces of interest.

First (It has printed)

DIED

On Thursday last, Mr. Charles Churchill, Merchant of this town. He has left a disconsolate widow, and a number of small children to bewail his loss.

Second ( Below that is this printing)

PUBLIC SALE

On Monday the 11th of October next, William Shepard's Warehouse, Will commence the Sale of 215 Bales, 22 Chests, 12 Trunks, 43 Cases, 2 Boxes, 60 Casks, 474 Bundles, and 22 crates of English Goods, captured by the Private armed Schooner SnapDragon .....

I find this interesting because if you look on the Internet for an 1813 calendar. You find that the 16th of September is indeed a Thursday, and the 11th of October is indeed a Monday, which fits with the information from the stories. However, in 1818 this is not the case.

I am wondering if perhaps a "3" was taken to be an "8" for any number of reasons, handwriting, poor quality document, etc. If so,Could the date of Charles death actually be 5 years earlier on 16 Sept. 1813?

Also of great interest is the children of Charles. "The Churchill Family in America" list 6 children. I have been able to find information on two of them Chappell McClure and Claudius Belden Churchill. I have never been able to find any data, information on the remaining four. Has anyone been able to trace the remaining four children as listed in the book Clinton Greene, Constantine Woods, Crispen Osborne and Cleopas Washington?

Thanking you in advance,

Ed Kennair
