Notes for ROGER DE CHURCHILE:
The ancestor of the Churchills is said to have been GITTO DE LEON, of a noble family of Normandy, who lived A.D. 1055 and whose grandson ROGER DE COURCIL came to England with William the Conqueror, and was given grants of land in Somerset, Dorset, and Devon counties. In the time of Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603) William Churchill of Rockbear, Devon married Elizabeth Bond of Purbeck. Their children are: Roger, ancestor of the Duke of Marlborough; William; John, who founded a family in Dorsetshire and in 1609 purchased the estate of Muston. This John is not the person who married Hannah Pontus above.
