Hi Glynda, I too have not forgot to send you my thoughts on Otho deLeon Castellon of Gisors, and Roger deCourcelles. You state that your relative is working on the origin of the surname Churchill. I would have thought that the Norman French name of the town Courcelles Sur Mer was the origin of the surname. I would also think that it would have been pronounced very close to "Core Chell" and may have evolved phonetically from Norman French to the nearest Anglo Saxon sounding words "Church Hill". Obviously, only my thoughts. I would be interested in anyone else's thoughts. Sir Winston Churchill mentioned that the name may have come from a farm named Churchill, but I would think that the descendants of Roger deCourcelles had their own family name and did not have to adopt Churchill after a farm in Devon. Again only my thoughts. Some Churchills, of course, may have descended from caretakers, and servants who took the name as many slaves in the United States and Canada took the names of their plantations or masters. The problem is... which ones. Regards Paul PS Sounds like the book by Elizabeth Snell didn't really help much. It is out of print by the way.
