More on Josiah and William of VA

Dear Josiah and William of VA descendants,

I have found some important new information--actually thanks to Alexander Hamilton, i.e., the exhibit on him at the NY Historical Society. So I went to their library to double check a Worden name (my mother's maiden) in their ms. file and looked up Churchill and lo, and behold what did I find?

An indentured servant agreement and estate will of: Joshua Brookes, of St. John's Parish, Southwark, in the Country of Surry. . . the last will and testament of Brother John Brookes, late of Loortfort of London Surgeon deceased of the one part and Prudence Churchill, of Saint John Parish, Loarkney, County of Middlesex. Joshua was bound to Prudence for 1,140 Lbs. and it looks like the inheritance went to write off the indenture sum. She also gained property in St. Stephen's and Mooreham Parish, Loortfort, with border names: Blackbird's and Ashley Lanes. Date 5/25/1751.

The most significant fact is that, Nathaniel Foote's parents were Robert F. and Joan Brooke--am assuming same family. And as we know, d. Eliz. m. Josiah Churchill. My Prudence Churchill, as I remember, had the maiden name of Tryon, an important Northamptonshire Puritan family that funded churches in Colchester.

Other items with the Brookes family file show them with VA & N. England connections:

A deed tranferring 14,000 acres in VA from Coleman to Perkins (ca. 1800?)

In England, lease of land from Thorsby Cotton to William Smith, 1777 (the Smiths of Braintree were part of Hooker's Hartford group that the Wethersfield folk intermarried with; of course Cotton Mather was the one who Hooker had the falling out with in MA)

Deed of VT land transferring property from Noah Smith to Joshua Brookes (ca. 1800)

Then in 1763, NYC transfer of land from John Forbes to John Murray (as in Murray Hill in Manhattan?)

Finally a note of a 1947 issue of the NYHS Quarterly that had an article on Joshua Brookes having dinner at Mt. Vernon.

I've looked on the internet and the Foote connection was the only real one I found. There are no churches in Middlesex with the name of St. John's.

It also appears that Joshua Brookes ended up in VA which is how this deed came to America. (It was like Moses' tablet--about 3' x 3')

But this seems to confirm my theory of the contacts between VA and N. England families, apparently via Northampton/Oxfordshire, Middlesex, and Essex.
