Linda, if I may jump in with an answer here, the Levi Churchill that you are looking for is from a family that is somewhat difficult to sort out because of errors in "Churchill Family in America," some of which they corrected with notes later in the book and some of which they didn't. Levi is a 6th generation Connecticut Churchill, descended from the immigrant Josiah. The confusion arises because of the flight of Levi's grandfather William and his family from the Wyoming Valley Massacre during the Revolution. They escaped upriver, passing through the Elmira, New York, area and then Massachusetts before returning home to Connecticut. Levi's father Asa was born during this flight, in Westfield, Massachusetts, on July 12, 1780.

Asa married Hannah Norton in 1802. "Churchill Family in America" states that she was from Bristol, New York, but it is virtually certain that it was instead Bristol, Connecticut. Bristol, New York, was in a part of the state that would have been wilderness when Hannah was growing up. In addition, Asa's older brother David, a tin peddler who moved from place to place, apparently lived much of the time in Bristol, Connecticut, and Asa had by 1817 moved from Farmington to Bristol, Connecticut, where he died in 1833.

Levi, born March 26, 1817, at Bristol, Connecticut, was the sixth of 7 children born to Asa and Hanna, 5 of whom survived. Levi seems to have also moved around. "Churchill Family in America" says he "(l)ived at Chester, and later at Haddam, Conn." His first marriage was in Southbury, Connecticut, to Mary Camp of Southbury, daughter of Johnson Camp. They apparently lived after their marriage in Hamden, Connecticut, as all three of their children were born there. Hamden is where Levi's brother Willis lived after his marriage to a Hamden girl until 1861. Mary died September 13, 1868, following which Levi married Mrs. Cynthia Tyler of Haddam, who died Sept. 9, 1883. Although the entry for Levi spells his second wife's name as Tyler, the entry for Asa which shows his children together with their spouses spells her name Taylor, which is how it appears in the index in "Churchill Family in America."

Levi and Mary's two oldest children, Jane and Martha, married, and at least Jane had children. The youngest child, Henry, seems not to have married.

Malcolm Churchill
