As I know it, there is a relationship between Mary Churchill and Sir Winston Churchill. The common ancestor to both are through William Churchill 2nd and Mary Cruwys both of Muston England. William was born around 1531, and was the also the ancestor of the Dukes of Marlborough whose enemies claimed that William was a blacksmith on the Meggs family estate. To which Sir Winston said "But, who would not prefer a real live blacksmith to a companion of the Conqueror, a figment of Restoration snobbery and hypothetical heraldry?" Winston also mentions Otho deLeon, Castlellon of Gisors as the first common ancestor of the Churchills.

Of course you are on solid ground with John Churchill 1st of Plymouth. Going back much further requires a lot of concessions, but then again, who would not prefer a Plymouth farmer, than a Norman noble named Otho?

Hope this helps
