Ruth: I've been researching "Connecticut" Churchills for nearly two years, visited Wethersfield and historical societies,etc, thereabouts. Josiah Churchill/Elizabeth Foote were the parents of Joseph (also a g grandfather of mine). For the record, my research found Joseph did not marry Mary Toucey, but Mary Catlin. I have seen manuscripts compiled by Toucey and Catlin family members. Toucey manuscripts did not claim Mary married Joseph, but, the Catlin manual did. There is much confusion with old records because, for large part, they don't exist. It wasn't even necessary to register vitals til abt. 1850. So what you see on the computer has been mostly gleaned from chroniclers who arrived on the scene long after the facts. The chroniclers compiled much of their records from various sources, churches, etc., but often from descendants who carried on "stories from generation to generation.
The confusion with whom Joseph married - Catlin or Toucey, could be linked to the fact that a third generation Churchill, Josiah did marry a Toucey, but her name was Elizabeth. For your information, you can start your search by logging onto "www.rootsweb.com", enter Joseph's name and scroll to "worldconnect". That one source (there are others)could keep you busy for months.
