Rich, OK I understand what Churchill line you are talking about. The descendency you show from William and Mary (Cruse) Churchill is not quite correct. I have pasted a modified report generated by Family Origins below that shows the correct descendency to your John11. Also, we have done an evaluation on the English John which I suspect is your John12 and I have also pasted that below: FIRST GENERATION 1. William CHURCHILL of Dorset was born between 1490 and 1500 in Catherston Leweston ? (Chrono date). He died before 11 Jul 1583 in Piddlehinton, Dorset, England. He was buried on 11 Jul 1583 in Piddlehinton, Dorset, England. He was married to Mary CREUSE (daughter of Richard CREUSE) before 1511. Mary CREUSE was born about 1490 in Bradford, Devon. William CHURCHILL of Dorset and Mary CREUSE had three confirmed children but may have had six. The eldest was: +2 i. John CHURCHILL of Dorchester (born about 1512). SECOND GENERATION 2. He was married to Edith BOND (daughter of William BOND of Herringston and Lutton and Elizabeth PROWZ of Bridy) about 1540 in Dorchester, Dorsetshire, England. Edith BOND was born in 1519 in Lutton, Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, England. John CHURCHILL of Dorchester and Edith BOND had three children. The eldest was: +8 i. William CHURCHILL of Dorchester (born in 1541). THIRD GENERATION 8. William CHURCHILL of Dorchester was born in 1541 in Dorchester, Dorsetshire, England. He signed a will on 12 Mar 1599. Miss SWAYNE was born about 1545 in Blandford, Dorset, England. William CHURCHILL of Dorchester and Miss SWAYNE had the following children: +15 i. Eldest son CHURCHILL (born about 1565, Given name unknown.) +16 ii. John CHURCHILL of Stinsford and Muston, Dorset (born about 1566). +17 iii. Virtue CHURCHILL (born about 1568). +18 iv. Grace CHURCHILL (born about 1570). +19 v. Ann CHURCHILL (born in 1572). +20 vi. Mary CHURCHILL (born about 1574). FOURTH GENERATION 16. John CHURCHILL of Stinsford and Muston, Dorset was born about 1566 in Dorchester, Dorsetshire, England. He graduated in 1587 in Hart Hall, Oxford. He was a Barrister in 1589 in the Middle Temple, London. He died on 31 May 1621. He was buried in St. Peter's Church, Dorchester, England. He owned Muston Deeds in Piddlehinton, Dorset, England. He was married to Eleanor MILLER of Came (daughter of John MILLER of Winterborne, Kyme (Came) and Anne WINTERHAY of Chethall, Dorset) about 1595 in Dorchester, Dorsetshire, England. Eleanor MILLER of Came was born before 1575. She died between 16 Apr 1641 and 10 Jul 1641. She had an estate probated on 10 Jul 1641. John CHURCHILL of Stinsford and Muston, Dorset and Eleanor MILLER of Came had the following children: +43 i. William CHURCHILL of Munston (born about 1596). +44 ii. Anne CHURCHILL (born about 1597). 45 iii. John CHURCHILL was born about 1598 in Dorchester, Dorsetshire, England. He died an INFANT. +46 iv. George Gervase CHURCHILL (born about 1599). +47 v. CHURCHILL Rector of Stinsford and Steeple M.A was born about 1603 in Muston, Dorset, England. He was instituted on 16 Mar 1636 in Stinsford, Dorset, England. He was instituted on 22 Jun 1637 in Steeple, Dorset, England. He signed a will on 14 Oct 1681 in Steeple, Dorset, England. He died in Mar 1682 in Steeple, Dorset, England. He was buried on 28 Mar 1682 in Steeple, Dorset, England. He was married to Sarah surname unknown between 1639 and 1641 in Steeple, Dorset, England. Sarah’s birth date is uncertain but is given by an unreliable LDS submitter as 1602 making he older than her husband John Churchill. She died before 23 Oct 1678 in Steeple, Dorset, England. (She was buried on 23 Oct 1678 according to the parish register.) Reverend John R. CHURCHILL Rector of Stinsford and Steeple M.A and Sarah had the following children: +2 i. Sarah CHURCHILL (born before Feb 1642). +3 ii. Mary CHURCHILL (born before 6 May 1646). +4 iii. Elizabeth CHURCHILL (born before Feb 1648). Note on Sarah’s surname: Sarah is listed in LDS records as "Mrs. Sarah Churchill." Today the honorific "Mrs." means a married woman and is applied to all married women regardless of their social status. However, in the 17th century Mrs. was the abbreviation for Mistress and was an honorific applied only to girls and women who had NEVER been married and were of gentry status. The source of the LDS record is questionable. To date no actual parish record has been found for either the marriage or the birth of this Sarah. However, assuming that the record is from a valid marriage record and the entry did include the honorific "Mrs" then the maiden name of Sarah would have been Churchill. To date no record for a Sarah Churchill who would have been born about 1602 has been found. Results of evaluations for John Churchill of Plymouth, MA: To date 10 English John Churchills who were born in the time period to be John Churchill of Plymouth, MA have been evaluated. One of these John Churchills is a John Churchill who was said to have been born in 1620 and was a son of the above John R. Churchill. The result of the evaluation for the Born 1620 John Churchill, son of John R. Churchill is as follows: JOHN CHURCHILL BORN 1620: Background: A John Churchill of Muston who, it is said, was born in 1620 is possibly the most popular candidate for John Churchill of Plymouth. This John Churchill is erroneously named as a son of the Reverend John R. Churchill the Rector of Stinsford and Steeple. The Reverend John was born in 1603 based on various sources. According to an unverifiable LDS marriage record the Reverend John was said to have married a Sarah Churchill in 1619. A more reliable source, the Pedigree of the Churchills of Colliton and Alderholt Park, gives no marriage date but simply identifies his wife’s name as Sarah. The Reverend John Churchill was instituted Rector of Stinsford 16 March 1636 and Rector of Steeple on the Isle of Purbeck on 22 June 1637. This is according to Hutchins and the Pedigree of the Churchills of Colliton. According to the pedigree and other sources, this Reverend John, born in 1603, was a son of John Churchill and Eleanor Meller. As mentioned above, the surname of Reverend John of Stinsford’s wife, Sara, is unknown. However, some LDS references taken from actual parish records call her “Mrs. Sarah Churchill.” It has been speculated that the honorific “Mrs.” meant that she was a Churchill widow; however, in this time the honorific “Mrs” or Mistress was used only for un-married gentry. Thus, a register entry “Mrs. Sarah Churchill” would have meant that Sarah was a maiden (never married) and of gentry status. Harry Hadaway who has genealogy site http://www.gendex.com/users/hhadaway/ Hadaway/ hadawaypage.htm lists her surname as Sarah May and gives a Janice Melinda Maxwell as his source. Janice, however, says that she does not know Sarah’s maiden name. Janice is aware that Harry lists Sarah’s name as May based on her information. Janice said that she contacted Harry after his posting. Harry had apparently mistakenly entered the month of Janice’s date of death for John (the month of May) as Sarah’s surname. Mr. Hadaway acknowledged this but has never changed the information in his listing. It should be noted that that Janice’s date of death for the Reverend John is actually incorrect. Janice has 23 May 1659 but Sarah actually died bef 23 Oct 1678 but likely in the month of October. According to Hutchins and the actual Purbeck parish register, Sarah was buried on 23 Oct 1678. Actual death dates were rarely recorded in this period. John and Sarah Churchill are known to have had the following children: Sarah Churchill is listed as born in 1623 in Stinsford, Dorset by LDS sources. The Pedigree of Churchill does not give her birth date as birth dates were not recorded in that period but says that she was baptized at Steeple on 3 February 1642. She married William Collins on 19 Sep 1664 on the Isle of Purbeck and was buried on 9 Dec 1675 at Steeple, Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, England. Mary Churchill is listed as born in 1625 in Stinsford by LDS sources. She was baptized at Steeple on 6 May 1646 according to the Pedigree of Churchill. LDS records say that she married William Clark on 8 Sep 1654 on the Isle of Purbeck. The Pedigree of Colliton makes no mention of a William Clarke marriage but says that she married John Scovile, Gentleman, on 8 Sep 1665 at Steeple, Isle of Purbeck, Dorset. Elizabeth Churchill was born in 1629 according to LDS sources. According to the Pedigree of Colliton she was baptized on 8 Feb 1648. There is no mention of her birth date. She married Nathaniel Bond on 21 Dec 1667. She died on 18 Dec 1674 at Steeple and was buried 21 Dec 1674 at Steeple, Isle of Purbeck, Dorset according to the Pedigree of Colliton. John Churchill who is said by LDS records to be the son of this John and Sarah Churchill is listed as born in 1620 at Muston. This birth information was submitted on IGI F500506, Sheet 27 by a Fred E. Sawyer. Mr. Sawyer lists The Churchill Family in America, other unspecified IGIs and something called T.I.B as his sources. The only information Mr. Sawyer could have obtained from The Churchill Family in America would have been its conjecture to the effect that John of Plymouth may have descended in some way from John and Eleanor (Miller) Churchill. John and Eleanor were the Reverend John’s parents. The only other IGI information that has been verified as valid is the Steeple infant baptism records for the daughters of John and Sarah. All other dates were provided by IGI “submitters” who did not provide valid sources. Evaluation: The claim that John Churchill of Plymouth was born at Muston in 1620 and was the son of John Churchill born in 1603 is suspicious. First of all, the 1603 John was an ordained Church of England clergy who became a Rector. To become clergy he would have completed his elementary education at about age 13 or 14. At that time he would have been able to read and do basic ciphering but would not have learned Latin or to write script. By 16 or 17 he would have completed advanced basic education and been able to write script and read basic Latin. He would then have attended college for training as clergy. Following that he would have been ordained and continued his training in the field. He would have spent time in junior positions before becoming Rector. His apprenticeship on the way to Rector would have taken a number of years. Indeed we know that he did not become a Rector until September of 1636 when he was 33 years old. While it is possible that he had married by this time it is not likely. His marrying Sarah in 1619 at 16 years of age and prior to the start of his religious training would likely have scuttled any plans he had to be a clergy. Setting this aside, however, his first verified child Sarah was baptized in February 1642 when John was 39 years old. Sarah’s baptism was followed four years later by Mary in 1646 and finally Elizabeth was baptized two years after that in 1648. The Church of England believed in Infant Baptism. The Elizabethan prayer book instructed clergy to "admonish the people that they defer not the baptism of infants any longer than the Sunday or other holy day next after the child be born, unless upon a great and reasonable cause declared to the curate and by him approved." Thus, an infant baptism was conducted generally within a week after birth unless the baby was sickly, in which case a baptism could occur either shortly after birth (and in an emergency might be performed by a midwife rather than clergy) or might be delayed weeks after birth if the child was sickly but recovering. Since John was clergy his children would have been baptized as soon as possible after birth and that would have probably been within a week of their birth. We are asked to believe that John married Sarah in 1619 at age 16, had John of Plymouth the next year in 1620 and then waited until about 1642 to have their next child. LDS submissions show birth dates for Sarah in 1623, Mary in 1625 and Elizabeth in 1629. However, the above 1642, 1646 and 1648 baptism dates are from actual parish register baptism records. In addition, the LDS submitter “birth” reports are suspicious in that births were not recorded in this period and are not normally contained in church records of the time. In summary, since the Anglican Church believed in Infant Baptism a COE clergy would not have waited from 1623 until 1646 to Baptize his eldest daughter. And if he had why did he not baptize Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah together? The idea that an Anglican clergy would wait until his child was of an age of understanding for baptism could only come from Anabaptist based Protestants who believe in adult baptism such as modern Baptists, Quakers or Mormons. In the 17th century the only people who performed adult baptism were non-conformist, separatists. Church records suggest that the 1603 Reverend John Churchill was not a non-conformist. (Some Anglican clergy in this time were.) He most certainly was not a separatist (Anabaptist). Conclusion: The Infant Baptism records of their children suggest that John married Sarah between 1639 and 1640 and no later than early 1641. John and Sarah probably had Sarah within a year or two. Mary followed 4 years later and Elizabeth followed two years after that. According to John’s will he had no (surviving) sons and parish records show no sons. Assuming there was a John Churchill born in 1620 in the Muston area, he was not the son of the Reverend John Churchill, the Rector of Stinsford and Steeple and his wife Sarah. There is no evidence to suggest that this 1620 John Churchill was John of Plymouth, MA. No actual parish register entry in Dorset has been found for any John Churchill born or baptized in 1620. We have only an unverified LDS submitter record. This 1620 John Churchill probably did not exist.
