Since posting here a year ago, I have found the parents of Benjamin Church, the pioneer carpenter and builder who came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from New Paltz, Ulster County, New York, via Chicago in November 1835. Since there have been a good number of queries about this family, here is a follow-up.
Benjamin's parents were Caleb and Hannah Baker Church. I have obtained from the Ulster County, New York, Genealogical Society a copy of a biography of their son Samuel, published in the "Commemorative Biographical Record of Ulster County, New York," published in 1896. Samuel was Benjamin's older brother, their birth years being 1805 and 1807 respectively.
This text describes Samuel's parents this way: "Caleb Church was born in Dutchess county, N.Y., and was reared upon a farm. He married Miss Hannah Baker, whose native place was Clintondale, and there the young couple settled on a farm and reared ten children...." [See pp. 926-927].
Dutchess and Ulster counties are in southeast New York, on opposites sides of the Hudson River.
The 1913 book by John A. Church, "The Descendants of Richard Church of Plymouth, Massachusetts," does include Caleb and Hannah Baker Church and their children, but notes that their precise place among Richard Church's descendants is not clear. [See pp. 321-323].
Caleb's birth date is given as December 19, 1772, and an alternative birth location is Dartmouth, Massachusetts. Hannah was born March 4, 1773, and grew up in Clintondale near New Paltz in Ulster County.
Caleb was a farmer and cooper. Hannah was a Quaker minister of note and played a role in establishing the Friends society and building there. Both husband and wife were members of the Orthodox Friends Church. This Clintondale Church history mentions her: http://thorn.pair.com/thorn/cmm/cmmhist.htm
Their children and birth years are given as John, 1798; Adam, 1800; Jacob, 1803; Samuel, 1805; Benjamin, 1807; Phebe, 1811; Thorn, 1813; James, 1816; and George, 1819. Samuel's biography mentions in addition a brother Caleb and sister Mary.
The 1800, 1810 and 1830 Census records place Caleb Church in New Paltz, Ulster County, N.Y., the location typically given for Benjamin Church's birthplace in 1807.
The 1850 Census has a Caleb Church, 80, living with Mary Church, 40, likely his daughter, in Lloyd, Ulster County.
