Maybe Johan Frithiof Christiansson, from Hinneryd in Sweden, is your man?
He emigrated through the port of Malmö on 25 April 1889, with a ticket for Ridgeway, Pennsylvania. He is listed as 19 years old. Profession in Sweden was farm labourer.
Hinneryd is a parish in Småland province, Kronoberg county. 18 km north of town Markaryd.
"Johan Frithiof" is very likely to become "John Fred" in English.
