I am William Isaac Chowning's great-great granddaughter.I was just in Missouri and found 2 homesites for him at what was once Cobalt, Mo.My mother, Necy Chowning, had been shown one of them by William Isaac's granddaughter and grandson, my dad's Aunt Lyd, and Uncle Lawrence. This one, I believe is only the foundation of the original house, with a newer residence added on top.The foundation and cellar walls are not mortared, but are of matched rock. The second homesite I can remember going to as a child, with Aunt Lyd and Uncle Lawrence. The house was gone, but we found old penneys, square nails, and an iron wheel from a child's toy. Also, there were daffodils and irises still growing at the site.I returned there last month, with the owner of the property now.He was able to show me where the cellar, the pond, and the cistern were.He helped his father tear the original house down around 1941.
