Two James Chownings in Eastern VA-1820

The 1820 census shows a James Chowning in BOTH Middlesex Co., VA and Lancaster Co., VA. I am almost certain that the James Chowning who was in Lancaster Co., VA was James C. Chowning, a son of Captain John Chowning Sr. and Catherine Blakey. James C. Chowning married Clementis Smith (though I have seen one record that showed her name as Caroline Carter Smith....who may have been married previously to a Mr. Clements....I do not know the source for this "different" name). James C. Chowning's next wife was Elizabeth H. Whiting.

Some claim that the first wife of James C. Chowning was Maria/Marie Sutton. I can't help but wonder, however, if she was actually the wife of the James Chowning who was on the 1820 census in Middlesex Co., VA. From the census, it certainly appears that the James Chowning in Middlesex was married to SOMEONE.

Note: The James Chowning in Middlesex in 1820 was APPARENTLY the man of that name who was also on the 1810 Middlesex census. There was no one named James Chowning on the 1810 Lancaster census, but there were two John Chownings on that Lancaster census, and one of then was probably James C. Chonwing's father, Captain John Chowning (and maybe James C. Chowning was living in someone else's home in 1810).

Does anyone know the lineage of the James Chowning in Middlesex in 1810 and 1820. As I recall, there was a Charles Chowning in the overall family who fathered a son named James Chowning who was about the same age as James C. Chowning (both were born around the early-1780s). I think that family moved to KY...but maybe the son named James Chowning was still in Middlesex Co., VA through at least 1820. I just so not see any other "known" James Chownings in this overall family who could have been the James Chowning in Middlesex Co., VA in 1810 and/or 1820. Comments?
