James Chewning/Chowning-Middlesex Co., VA Area
Per a 1 Jan 1822 chancery court case, a James Chewning was an heir of Colonel Maurice Smith of Middlesex Co., VA.It strongly appears that James Chewning had married one of the Colonel's three daughters (probably Catherine Smith, since the other two daughters named Frances Smith and Patty/Patsy Smith seem to have married into the Webb family).Does anyone know the lineage of this James Chewning?Could he have been the man listed as James Chowning on the 1820 Middlesex Co., VA census?I note that there was also a James Chowning on the 1820 Lancaster Co., VA census. These were apparently the ONLY two men on censuses in VA in 1820 named James Chowning or Chewning.Thanks.
