Dear Genealogy.Com, I am the president of the Chou Clansmen Association of America. While our membership, at present, is small, we are connected to the Chow family "Chin Yin Tong Society", in mainland China, which has a membership of over 29 million people surnamed Chow (Zhou, Chow, Chou). My second cousin is China's late Premier Zhou Enlai and he and my grandfather were born in the same house in China. I am writing to let you know that we use the romanization of Chow as our last name, in America and outside of mainland China, and that we use this romanization as the standard romanization for all people who carry our last name. By using only one romanization, we cut the confusion of having too many people of our clan using all sorts of romanizations. By the Chinese tradition and custom, a family is not supposed to name their dynasty with the same name as their family. This tradition (Law of China's Imperial Dynasties and Succession) came about after the Chou Dynasty, because of the Chou Dynasty's exceptional benevolence and traditional Chinese virtue. The Chou Dynasty is the only dynasty in China's history to be so named. We, of the Chou clan society, therefore, use the romanization of "Chow" as our last name and "Chou" to stand for the dynasty. I am glad that genealogy.com maintains this practice too! Sincerely, Lester D. K. Chow, president The Chou Clansmen Association of America http://www.idis.com/ChouOnline
