From the story I am getting,(i have no evidence though), it is believed the Choate name may have originated in France as "Van CHOATE", and some of them moved into the Dutch area. Some of these Dutch people migrated to England and dropped the Van from the name, leaving it as only Choate. They dropped the Van part because of the prejudice of some of the English people at the time. The story JRC is telling seems like a good one. - There is also the story of Choate coming from the name "Chute". I tend to lean toward the first story, that it was originally Van Choate. I'd bet there are many other stories out there to be told.
