Alfred must be the son of either William or James Chiswell the sons of Richard and Elizabeth. James became John Mattocks stepson when he married the widowed Elizabeth. He inherited from his stepfather. William was however caste of with a shilling. James did not marry until after Alfreds birth. I actually think Alfred is the son of William
possible marriages
1. William CHISWELL m Sarah BEVAN 25 Nov 1809 at St. Paul, Bristol by banns both otp.
2. William CHISWELL m Jane GOVER 14 Dec 1812 at St. James, Bristol by banns both otp.

In 1841 there is a William Chiswell aged 54 in Chew Magna. He is a Sailor or Tailor and married to a Jane also aged 54, both from Somerset. This is probably marriage 2 above.

In 1851 that William is widowed and still living in Chew Magna

In 1861 he is described as widowed aged 73, a beer house keeper born Chew Magna.

So what happened to the William m to Sarah Bevan?
