EVA: I am in the same line up thru Abraham and agree with everything you have listed. My line branches to Fielden Chism at that point. Evidently he was John Mack's brother. If you live in Meade Co.or can go there, there is a book in the Public Library with SIOSAL in the title written by James E. "TRAIL" Chism that contains a ton of information about the Meade Co. Chism's. His information also gets a bit thin about the same place as yours. Richard and his father James are very well documented in the book. James's father is believed to be a James "of Caroline" Chism b. about 1695. About all I can find about him is that he supposedly leased 140 acres from Gov. Spotswood of Va. on 1 Apr 1740 for the lives of his sons James Jr and William. I believe the "caroline" to refer to Caroline Co Va and not the Carolina States. Also Richard Cheesome and Margaret Isham had a son James b. about 1657 and he had sons named John b.1681 and James Jr b.?. John died in 1734 in Caroline Co. Va. I don't know for sure if this is the same line or not. It seems the custom of the time was to name the first son after the father (Jr.) and to name any other sons after the fathers's brothers. This made for a lot of James',John's and George's and a lot of confusion. Also, the county boundries and names were changing frequently. Anyone with knowledge of the very early (1600) Chisms (Chisholms,Chisums etc) is more than welcome to jump in here as my information is sketchy at best. I plan to do more work this winter. Eva, Let me know if you have any other questions. It was nice to hear from you and hopefully we can help each other solve the riddle.
