There was no James who married Mary HOWARD. Many years ago when info was being collected for the Harlan Genealogy and other printed histories someone used unproven information and this false ancestor couple was formed. This also occured when some of the tombstones at Mill Creek church were replaced in the mid 1930's. The tombstone bares James CHISM's name in fact more than likely marks the grave of John Chism. A search through the Barren Co, Ky records reveals NO James that is of age to have been the father of the Monroe Co, KY Chism's. There is however a John Chism, SR who in fact deeds land to the Chism boys. Also there is no James Chism of the appropriate age on Census or Tax records. The surviving Chism boys report there birthplace as being Virginia in census records. I find it very hard to believe that Mary HOWARD, supposed daughter of Obediah Howard, was the mother as her family lived in South Carolina and did not come to Barren Co until after 1790 which was after or during the time that the Chism children were being born in Virginia. I believe that the John Chism mentioned above was from Rockingham Co, VA where the Gum's were from as well. Jesse Gum lived next to John Chism and John Chism also named his children names that were common in the Gum family. There is also an old letter in the Filson Club Chism file that mentions that the Chism children's mother was a Gum. Granted all this is very circumstantial but what we can be 100% sure of is that the progenitor of the Chism family was John who had wife Mary and not James(never existed at least not in this direct line) who married Mary Howard(may or may not have existed but was definately not the mother of the Chism children)
