this fellow is not part of my tree, but was featured in a newspaper article along with a relative of mine. taken from the jonesboro sun <arkansas>, dated 4/19/49. enjoy! 'John Green Chism, 100, lives at Ben Hur in Newton County, Ark.' 'Mr. Chism lives with his wife in one of the abandoned camp houses at an old CCC camp. He was born and reared in Izard County. He said he was just a soldier. In camp for General Price, he was in Camp G but not sure of the regiment. He entered the army at the Bob Galloway place in Jackson County, below New Port, while General Price was there. 'I remember how many of the men looked, but can't remember their names', he said sadly. 'I remember a lieutenant Hare who was nice to me, and a strapping big fellow named Fred. I weighed about 100 lbs, and he would push me up into the air so that I could gather peaches from a tree. We never got into battle, but marched down the river when we were ordered to surrender at Jackson Port. There was still plenty of life left in the outfit when they surrendered. My uncle Tom Chism killed 3 men with a board while we were surrendering. They yelled for the other side.' And there is still plenty of fight left in Mr. Chism, although he will be 101 years old late in January. He and his wife, who was formerly Miss Sally Goswick, live alone in a little house. Mr. Chism has spent the mornings in bed since he suffered a stroke last spring.' Notify Administrator about this message?
