I am a descendant from James Chism and Mary HOWARD (daughter of Obediah Howard and Priscilla Breed). There DEFINITELY WAS a James Chism and he did marry Mary Howard (not Mary Gum). I have records from Chism, Howard, Breed and Harlan showing this marriage and I have the names of the children of the marriage. Listed below are 7 Generations of Chism from John Chism, b. Abt. 1680 in King and Queen Co. VA - died 1734 in Caroline Co. VA.
1. John Chism (b.Abt.1680;d.1734)married ?? Isham
2. John Chism (b. 1706 in King and Queen Co. Va; died in Amelia Co. VA.) married Eleanor Gilletin in 1730. (Son of John Chism and ?? Isham)
3. James Chism (b. 1732 in Amelia Co. Va; d. 1793 in Halafax Co. VA) married Barbara ?? in Abt. 1752 (son of John Chism and Eleanor Gilletin)
4. James Thomas Chism, (b.10-15-1754 in VA.; d. 7-7-1819 in Barren Co. Kentucky) married Mary Howard in 1780 in Union Co. S.C. (daughter of Obediah Howard and Priscilla Breed). (James T. Chism was the son of James Chism and Barbara and his siblings were: Adam, John, Edmund, Sarah, Elinor, and Priscilla)
5. William Belew Chism (b. 4-8-1784 d. 3-11-1867 in Monroe Co.KY) married Priscilla Breed in 1804. (Priscilla Breed is the daughter of Nathan Breed and Mary Harlan. Nathan Breed was the brother of Priscilla Breed, wife of Obediah Howard. William Belew and Priscilla were second cousins.) He was the son of James T. Chism and Mary Howard and had the following siblings: Jacob, Michael, George, John, James T. and Elizabeth.
6. James Chism, (b. 1811;d.1840) married Ann Francis Simpson (daughter of George Simpson and Nancy Trigg). He was the son of William Belew Chism and Priscilla Breed and had the following siblings: Nathan, John A.,Robert Kirby, Mary, Michael, William G., Jacob, and Celia Jane.
7. Frances Priscilla Chism (b. 7-16-1839; d. 3-30-1895 in Clay Co. TN) married Cleon Escalus Dale in 1858 (son of William Dale and Martha Goodpasture). She was the daughter of James Chism and Ann Francis Simpson and had a sister Nancy Trigg Chism.
Frances Priscilla Chism Dale was my great-grandmother.

In "Pioneer Baptist Church Records of South-Central Kentucky and the Upper Cumberland of Tennessee 1799-1899" by C.P. Cawthorn & N. L. Warnell, published 1985,on Page 448:
"John Mulkey's mother was a daughter of Obediah and Priscilla (Breed) Howard. Obediah had been with Rev. Philip Mulkey in 1759 when they left Deep River in N.C. and moved to Fairforest in S.C. The Mulkeys and Howards had traveled together to TN and later removed to present Monroe Co. KY. Mary Howard, Obediah's oldest daughter married James Chism. They were the parents of Rev. Jacob Chism."

I can also give genealogical records from the Breed, Howard and Harlan lines to show that Mary Howard married James Chism.
