Hi Melissa.
Those Carrs and Kerrs, if connected with Chisholms are likely to be connected with the Border Branch of the Chisholms. These Border Chisholms are exhibiting the same I1a type as found in some of the Highland Chisholms, so it can be a trifle confusing.
All the mixing of the parents wont affect the Y DNA one little bit, its just the random mutations over time which allow the genetic scientists to work things out, and decide approximately when one branch divided off.
here are a lot of mutations in the Chsholm I1a group, but we could be considering a time period of 800 years. There is a genetic difference of 9 between oth ends of the spectrum, but these ends are only 4, or 5 different to the modal. Your Moodie ancestor with a genetic distance of 7/67 to the Chisholm modal group is more likely to be ancestrally related prior to the era of the Chisholm surname.
Time will tell, if we get a sample from a Chisholm descended from Alexander Chisholm who was in Charleston prior to the revolution, then we will know more, ut I would have to say that at the moment, the modern day connection looks to be more co-incidental.
cheers
Robert
