Hi Catherine, I saw your message regarding your ancestors from James River Nova Scotia, and that you expressed interest in the DNA project to help try and unravel some things. I am co-admoinistartor of the project, which is in ts early days yet, and it needs to build a wide base s that people like yourself can use it to try and jump that brick wall.To date we have 5 women and 6 men on the project. Of the men , only 1 result is out (mine) but 2 are partially out, and 3 are pending.Your Chisholms most certanly sound like Highlanders, and of the 6 test, 4 of these are with Highland ancestry, and one of these 4 is from New England but ex Nova Scotia. For you to try and establish your Chisholm family line via DNA, you will need to get a male in the family, with surname Chisholm, to do the Y-DNA test. The minimum test to do would be the Y 37 test, the 67 test will tell a lot more but does cost more. I think you would know about the Celtic naming conventions, and these can help give a clue as to who a father or mother might be, but as families migated away from the ld world, the conventions dropped, so it may only be applicable to the earliest of the generations who came to Canada. All the best with your research. Sounds like your ancestors held on in Scotland somewhere for a time after the clearances, but came over to relatives who had been evicted earlier and had established themselves in NS. If you want to look closer at the DNA option, the project is at http://www.familytreedna.com/(lertpkmlr4f40g5513scw555)/public/Chisholm/index.aspx regards Robert Chisholm Notify Administrator about this message?
