Thank you Jane for your response. In answer to your question, yes, the Herman Chipman I am referring to was born in 1786. I did not know that he immigrated to the U.S. The Nathaniel Chipman that I am researching did immigrate to (of all places) Iowa! Is the Sarah Chipman that you are researching the daughter of Herman and therefore the brother of Nathaniel? If so, it would make sense that they both wound up in Iowa. I'll look forward to your findings.
