Moore-Shanghai Police Commissioner '40s

I am trying to trace ancestors on my mother's side, but am having a great deal of trouble due to a number of factors. We know that my mother's grandfather was of UK descent and was Police Commissioner in Shanghai at least during the early 1940s until his death/assassination. His wife worked in a mission of some kind but we do not know if she stayed in Shanghai or returned to Ireland/Britain. He had two sons, one of whom died in Africa in 1942, the other whereabouts unknown (my grandfather).

If anyone has any information or leads they could help with, please contact me.
