A.B. Johnson, former resident of Grand Jct. and prominent for many years in the republican party in CO and CA died Wed night at his home in Pasedena, according to word recieved here by his brother, W.R. Johnson of First Fruit Ridge.
Mr. Johnson was one of the pioneer residents of Grand Jct, coming here with his brothers in 1886. For a number of years they were engaged in the cattle business and also owned a merchantile store in this city.
During his residence in Colo Mr Johnson many years ago owned and edited a newspaper in Gunnison** and later moved to Ogden & Salt Lake City.
In 1897 he was appointed U.S. consul general to China by president McKinley.Later he & his brother W.R. went to Manila where they were engaged in the lumber business. While in Manila Mr Johnson received a franchise from Pres Taft for the operation of the 1st electric street railway system in that city.
From Manila, he returned to Calif & while in that state served 2 terms in the legislature as state senator.
He was born in Iowa in 1856 , moved to Colo in 1886. He was 78 yrs at the time of his death.** He was a graduate of Iowa college and of a law school in that state.
As a result of his sojourn in China, Mr Johnson had one of the finest Chinese collections in the US, valued at $250,000 and housed in the Los Angeles Exposition building .
Mr Johnson is survived by a son & a daughter, both of Pasedena and three brothers; I.D Johnson of Delta; WR of Grand Jct. and Russell of Pasedena.
