One quick way to find out about the death of an individual in China would be THE NORTH-CHINA HERALD, especially since you know the month and year in which your relative died. Note also the substantial Shanghai church registers kept in Lambeth Palace Library, London. These are primarily Anglican but contain many Nonconformist and non-British burial registrations.
