Hi - according to a booklet published in 1995 which lists where Baptism, Marriage & Burial records are kept (where I was expecting to find info to help), under Shanghai no records after 1899 are mentioned for deaths/burials! - maybe this is why you have posted. Certainly seems odd, as there are baptisms/births to 1951 and marriages up to 1947 (older records listed in this as being at the PRO, but I believe they have now been tranferred to the Family Record Centre at Myddleton Street in London; more recent records are at Lambeth Palace Library). However at the beginning is a section which reads as follows - --------- 'INTERNATIONAL MEMORANDA' OF BAPTISMS, MARRIAGES & BURIALS OVERSEAS AT GUILDHALL LIBRARY (LONDON) In the 19th and early 20th centuries the Bishop of London's registry maintained a series of volumes (now known as 'International Memoranda') for the registration of miscellaneous foreign baptisms, marriages and burials. Most of the entries are for baptisms and marriages by chaplains officiating at British embassies abroad, but the series includes a number of other registrations made, e.g. by clergymen travelling overseas or on board ship. Registrations were sometimes accepted up to 30 years after a baptism, marriage or burial. Thus, although the first registration was accepted in 1816, the earliest baptism recorded in the series took place in 1788. The 'International Memoranda' are Guildhall Library Ms 10926/1-13. --------- I realise the last part doesn't seem relevant, being so much earlier, but there follows a table of dates covered by the various volumes 1-13 mentioned, and No.13 covers the period 1889-1924, with a note to the side which reads 'including baptisms, marriages and burials up to 5 years earlier'. They clearly have something at the Guildhall Library which covers the period you're looking for, but whether it will include the info you need is another question, but I can only suggest you contact them to ask. Info about how is at http://www.ull.ac.uk/his/guihis.html and their publications are listed at http://ihr.sas.ac.uk/gh/bookshop.htm which include a guide to births, marriages and deaths of British overseas before 1945. These appear to be information pages about the Guildhall Library only ... I haven't traced a website where you can order online or send enquiries, but you may have more luck. If you're not in the UK yourself, then it may be a case of asking a researcher to do this for you ... let me know if you're stuck, as I could pass on details of some people near London who have done work for me. Good luck! Now all I need to do is find out where in China I'm supposed to be looking, then I can post a query myself.........
