Dear Al,
I only have a transcription of what is on the death certificate. It appears that "Ah You" used these as his surnames and added the "Joseph" as an "English" christian name. I have not seen his grave site to see if there are any chinese characters on it. I live in Melbourne, Victoria. Wagga Wagga is in NSW, quite a distance away. His marriage took place at Stony Creek, Young, NSW to Charlotte Birch on 10/9/1882. He died of Phthisis (tuberculosis). Charlotte and the children seem to have cleared out because Kong Fat (informant) states on the certificate that the name of the spouse is "unknown" and the "children" space has been left blank. The transcript of the marriage certificate gives less information than does the death certificate. The Registry official would have put down words as close as possible to what he heard said to him. Joseph Ah You signed with an "x" mark. Surviving children of the marriage were Rose Ann (Wallington), Alice (Chung) and Sarah (Poole). There appears to have been twins Violet V and Daisea M as well, but who died. There may have been a Robert V as well. Charlotte re-married in 1889 to Samuel Tang at Wagga Wagga, NSW. There may have been a James Tang born of this marriage and perhaps a Charles F C who died. I have tried to look through shipping lists and have found some Ah You's, but nothing really conclusive. If Jo Ah You was born about 1836; he was reputed to be 51 years old when he died in 1887, and married in 1882, he would have migrated to Australia sometime in between 1836 and 1882. It's a lot of shipping to search with very few clues. I don't know if any of this has been of any help to you. Who are you researching?
Margaret Bradley.
