Where did Mr. Der immigrate to? You would want to find the local family association in the city he located to. Most families have one. Der can be spelled Tse as well.

The San Francisco, CA association is located at:

Tse Family Association
748 Jackson St # 4
San Francisco, CA 94133-4921
(415) 421-5292

You may google or use the the online yellow pages for Der/Tse listings in other cities.

Most associations can refer you to another city's association of the same clan name as well. You will need to have a Chinese speaker or the written characters for the person you are researching to able to get the name correct. You need to have their aliases as well. Many Chinese men took different names upon marriage and some circles know them only by their married names. This can be obtained from a Chinese tombstone or Chinese language obituary/death notice, or (if still living) a wedding invitation if the person's son/daughter has been married and issued a Chinese language or bi-lingual invitation. Living parents' names are always included in a traditional Chinese wedding invitation.

Also make sure you have the village name in characters. Is this the correct village? see: http://www.c-c-c.org/villagedb/display.cgi?level=Village&id=2122

Another resort is obtain the original immigration record and see if the person is traveling with anyone they know/relatives. You can find passenger lists through ancestry.com and then contact the National Archives that have immigration documents for the port of entry your subject used (assuming he immigrated to the United States).

Last resort is to contact the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Guangdong Province in China. Google them.
