Name: Tawnya E-Mail: tmkpk@earthlink.net Subject: Re: John H. Curtis, Ravenna, Nebraska, 1890s Added on Date: 5/20/00 Message Number: 1944 Body of Message: I would love to hear from you if you have any information, are related, or know of others or other resources that might be of interest and/or help to me in my genealogy quest. Email me (Tawnya) at tmkpk@earthlink.net or send via snail mail to 312-F Hampton Court, Lawrence, Kansas 66049. Any help would be appreciated. Thank-you for your interest and assistance in helping me in my quest to learn more about my family history and ancestors and their descendants. I just recently received photocopied articles from The Ravenna News (Nebraska newspaper)on John H. Curtis. One of John H. Curtis' daughters was named Miss Maggie Curtis (Margaret Rebecca Curtis). She married Mr. Harry Miner (John Haire Miner). They had one daughter named Ruth Miner who married a Mr. Garrison. No descendants. Maggie and Harry Miner, I believe, are buried in Ravenna. The Garrison couple is buried in Wood River, Nebraska. February 15, 1907 The Ravenna News At Grand Island, Nebraska, Tuesday, February 12, 1907, the Rev. Father Wolf, officiating, Mr. Harry Calk, late of Ravenna, now of Lincoln, and Miss Edith Curtis, daughter of Mrs. Kate Curtis, of Ravenna. I am not sure how these people fit into my Curtis family tree - I am certain they must be on the family tree somehow. Do you have any additional information? February 14, 1889 The Ravenna News Mr. Richard Curtis and Miss Carrie Tritt were married at the residence of the bride's parents at Sweetwater, Nebraska, Thursday evening, February 14th. Miss Maggie Curtis attended the bride and Mr. W.C. Pederit of Ravenna, acted in the capacity of best man. Gifts were given by Mr. and Mrs. John H. Curtis; Mr. and Mrs. Dietrick; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Boyle; Miss Maggie Michie; Miss Eva Henderson; Miss Maggie Curtis; Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Curtis; Mr. and Mrs. John Michie; Mr. and Mrs. D.F. Bremner; W.C. Pederit and mother; H.A. Beyer and wife; Mr. and Mrs. Wh.H. Bullock; Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Archard; Miss Katy Reynolds; Miss Nora Goff; C.B. Cass; Mr. and Mrs. W. Fowler; Miss Kate Michie; Mr. and Mrs. Dietrick; Mr. and Mrs. Hutchison; Mr. and Mrs. Tritt. Mr. and Mrs. Tritt, parents of the bride, gifted the married couple one milch cow! The parents of the groom were Mr. and Mrs. John H. Curtis. July 14, 1888 The Ravenna News At Loup City, Nebraska, on Saturday, July 14, at 2 o'clock p.m. by Rev. Joseph Grey; Mr. J.E. Curtis and Miss Katie Couton, both of Ravenna, Nebraska. The parents of J.E. Curtis "Ese" were Mr. and Mrs. John H. Curtis. January 23, 1890 The Ravenna News Joseph E. Curtis, familiarly known as Ese Curtis, died at 5 o'clock a.m., Jan. 19th. On the same day of the funeral, at 10 o'clock, his brother R.H. Curtis, also died of a lingering illness. Both were the sons of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Curtis. Both are buried in Ravenna, Nebraska. May 18, 1894 The Ravenna News Mrs. Carrie Curtis, widow of Dick (Richard) Curtis, was recently married to Mr. Frank Henderson of Shelton, Nebraska. December 18, 1898 The Ravenna News Golden Wedding anniversary article for Mr. and Mrs. John H. Curtis. John H. Curtis is about 83 years of age. He was born in 1815 in England. He crossed the Atlantic nineteen times, visited all the principle ports of Cuba and South America, Australia, India, China, Japan, the Philippine Islands, including Luzon and Manila, the metropolis. He spent several years on a whaling cruise in the Arctic seas. He has had all sorts of expeirences in all lands and all climes, and can spin sailor's yarns enough to fill a library. Mr. Curtis was a widower when he married the present Mrs. Curtis, fifty years ago. A son, by his first wife recently died at the age of about sixty years, at his home in India. A few years after his second marriage (married in Boston), Mr. Curtis gave up following the sea and located in Chicago where he engaged in business. Later he came to Nebraska an dlocated on a farm adjoining one homesteaded by John Michie, in Beaver Township. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis have 21 living children and grandchildren "all of whom are highly intelligent, good looking and progressive people." (I didn't make that up - the newspaper really said that!) May 12, 1900 The Ravenna News Mr. Curtis leaves an aged widow and three daughters, Mrs. John Michie, Mrs. Harry Miner, and Mrs. Willis Hutchison, and one son who lives in Chicago (name unknown). Three sons previously died (the one from India and the two sons mentioned above who died on within days of each other - Joseph E. "Ese" Curtis and Richard H. "Dick" Curtis). Now, there is a photocopy of a picture from Kate Michie Hochreiter's and Otto Hochreiter's 50th wedding anniversary that I have that has some Curtis descendants... Harry Hutchison, Gussie Hutchison, and Eugene Hutchison. So, John H. Curtis and his first wife had one son I think was named Thomas "Tom" Curtis (1836-1896). He lived and died in India on a tea farm. John H. Curtis and his second wife had three sons and three daughters. 1. I am descended from the daughter Mary Susan Curtis Michie (1850-1922) who married John Charles Michie. They have many, many, many descendants... 2. A second daughter Margaret Rebecca "Maggie" Curtis Miner married John Haire "Harry" Miner and they had one daughter who married and who did not have any descendants. 3. The third daughter married and had children and possibly descendants (Hutchison descendants). Her name was Elizabeth and she married Willis Hutchison. 4. Richard H. "Dick" Curtis (1857-1890) 5. Joseph E. "Ese" Curtis (1865-1890) 6. Son in Chicago with last name of Curtis - unknown first name. Don't know if he married or had descendants. He was alive when his father John H. Curtis died in 1900. The Ravenna News also reported that Sadie Miner Curtis died in Shell Rock, Iowa on July 31, 1918. Don't know how she's related exactly... Margaret Rebecca "Maggie" Curtis died August 20, 1910 at the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 24 days. Daughter of Katie Curtis died on February 8, 1893 at the age of 3. Katie Curtis is the widow of Joseph "Ese" "Esam" Curtis. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. "Ese" Curtis a girl on May 11, 1889. Hutchison and Mr. William J. Grabbert on January 22, 1911. Will live in Alliance, Nebraska. Not sure how related - think they are related through Mr. and Mrs. Willis Hutchison. Baby daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hutchison died on February 12, 1918. Don't know how Harry Hutchison is related - wonder if related through Mr. and Mrs. Willis Hutchison. Mr. Harry Hutchison, of Ravenna, and Miss Elsie M. Miley, of Broken Bow, Nebraska, were married on October 27, 1915. How are they related? Mr. George Hutchison and Miss Minnie M.
