Great to make contact at last. Iíve just realised that you are probably the same person I wrote to at about the same time I posted the message on this web site. Maybe you didnít get my letter or have moved. Anyway I have loads of stuff to exchange (including maps) which would be easier to do directly rather than via this message board. Would you mind sending me your email and/or postal address? Send it to me at email@example.com and I will get in touch with you.
Like you, Iím curious about the Chillmaid connection with Middlesbrough. My theory is that one or more of those who worked in the docks at Gravesend moved up there for work as Stevedores.
Did you ever get any information from Dave Malin on the Knowhere Noticeboard for Ashford? I sent him an email but it bounced.
By the way, my Edward Chillmaid is spelled with 2 Lís - it was a typo! But I have seen his name spelled in some records with one L. If your g-g-g-grandfather Robert Chillmaid was born about 1824 in Southfleet, then there may be a connection between us! I suspect that Robert is one of Edwardís many sons. Also I think I may have found a family which links up with your Leonard Brock Chillmaid.
I collect all I can about the name hoping to link it altogether later. Itís a rare surname so I feel that with a bit of persistence it should be possible to fit all the pieces of the family jigsaw together.
