Yes the repeating rifle was making quite an impact at that time I believe. And, the name is fairly prominently known for a number of other things as well. I know I may never know the connection but want to exhaust my possibilities all the same. He is physically described as having black hair, black eyes, and dark skin, though the skin could be the result of being a sailor... and then a farmer...

I believe he was a native English speaker and what little I've seen of his writing, he has some education - not extensive, but he is fairly literate. (And the fact that he did do the writing and it wasn't transcribed as some of the entries from his wife who apparently couldn't write).

I did drop a line to to John as you suggested. And, I am also hoping that the DNA will help find a connection - I hope that if I can track these Quintant's that maybe someone will know more about the story from their ancestors...
