Very many thanks, John, for this information- I had little hope of ever getting the right dates for these two people.
Interesting to see James was listed as "formerly" of Valparaiso. I have yet to find out what the family was up to in Chile.

The son John, stupid boy, decided to have an argument with an armed Chilean soldier in 1859, and having been shot by the same in the arm, had to have it amputated.

Now a new mystery- what on earth was John doing in Bolivia?

Once again, I am so grateful for this information regarding my Gt.Gt Grandfather James, and son John.
