Thanks again Peter this is all very useful. I did check the websites you suggested but no luck - thanks for the lead though.

We believe that Torre is the name and that our family line goes back to the Basques in Spain - this is because of our blood type (O negative) which is common among the Basques but otherwise quite rare. Torre is a Basque name. Also Jose married an Irish woman, Harriet Dowling, in Australia and we believe she Anglicised the name to Tory on their marriage certificate but went back to Torre in her later life and is listed as Torre on her death certificate.

If you have any suggestions for how we might follow up when we are in Chile in March/April that would be much appreciated.
