Frances E. Carkeet birth, Chile ca. 1855

On the 1860 U.S. Census for San Francisco I found an aunt, Frances E. Carkeek (or Carkeet, Carkeck, etc) that was born in Chile. She was age 5 in 1860 so her birthyear was around 1855. Any ideas as to where I start looking for a birthrecord? Her parents sailed to San Francisco from Tasmania, Australia (we think) around 1855 so she may have been born on ship and registered in Chile? Her parents were Morgan James Carkeek (sea captain) and Elizabeth Hardy.
