I am also interested in the Schmelcher family in Freeport, Michigan. My great grandmother was Magdalena Schmelcher who was born in 1839 in Wiesloch, Baden, the daughter of and Jacob and Elizabeth Schmelcher. They came to Freeport in 1852. They may have had a son, Jacob Schmelcher, who is listed in the 1900 U.S. Census for Barry Co. Michigan Irving Township, i.e. Freeport. But he had no daughter named Leona living at home in 1900. Perhaps she was living elsewhere?
Freeport was and is such a tiny town, these Schmelchers must be related. My great grandmother married a John George Reuter, and they lived in Freeport until their deaths. If you have any further information, I would appreciate it. Good luck.
