Most of my research on the Childress lineage is between 1700 and 1825.

There is evidence that after about 1800 some Childers families, in divergent regions and presumably not in communication with one another, began making what appears to be independent decisions to change the spelling of their name to Childress. It is possible to find, in some instances, the very document on which this happens.

I am persuaded that there are at least two gene pools out there, maybe more, that track back to different regions of the British Isles. If you see clear evidence that your earliest ancestors were spelling their name Childers and you are persuaded that that was the name they used, then that may be your heritage, to track where it goes.

The fact that a more recent generation voluntarily changed the spelling is just what happened… they voluntarily changed the spelling. While my research is not centered in this area, it seems that the voluntary changing of the spelling is not uncommon in the early 1800’s. Having said that, I’ll state the obvious, be sure that your ancestor did marry twice. There are a lot of recycled Christian names used again and again, generation to generation by both Childers and Childress lines. It is easy to confuse two people as being the same person. If you wish to send me what you know about the Christian, given names your family ancestors used, I’ll let you know if it suggests a link to my research.
