My mother's maiden name was Childress. All of the family used that spelling. When we started to research that line we found that her grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Childress, b. AL 1826, had been married before he married her grandmother in AK. The first family all seem to have spelled their names Childers but the second family spelled theirs Childress. The few records that we have found in AL, census, land sales and warrents go back and forth between Childers and Childress, almost all recorded by other parties. The only signature I have ever seen of his is Childress but I know that some of the first set of children used the Childers. My point is I guess that you have to check all possible spellings and used supporting evidence to make sure that you have the right family.
