CHILDRESS -vs- CHILDERS
As a seasoned Childress researcher, I am impelled to report that I have found the names of children and grandchildren of John Childress (1759-1849) of Knox Co, TN spelled both Childers and Childress. One case in point is this John's son, John III, who married Mary (Polly) Kirby in 1796 in Blount Co, TN. The Blount Co, TN court certified copy of their marriage bond reads John Childers to Mary Curby. Please note the court clerk evidently erred in the spelling of both family surnames. Over the past 25 years, I have attempted to follow the children of both John Childress (1759-1849) and his brother Mitchell Childress, Sr. (1750-1844). I have found numerous cases where the census taker, court clerk, justice of the peace who wrote their deeds, etc. spelled Childress as Childers. It all depended on what the scribe thought he heard and if that scribe spelled phonetically. This follows through in documents found in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas records.
