Mark,
You are probably right about the beginnings of the names Childers and Childress, but in the past few hundred years in America they get confused all of the time.
Many names get confused by census takers or court clerks.

I have one will of my Deborah Liles where the name Liles is spelled three different was in the same will.

I just noticed that on the Bureau of Land Management site all of the Alabama Childers are spelled Childers except George Childress in Dallas County
Alabama.

Now this George Childress is the same one in Perry County Alabama where my Frances Childers was born in 1833. I am beginning to suspect that Frances Childers is really Frances Childress.
(The name is spelled Childers on the 1850 census and that is the only time that I have seen it written down. Frances does not live with her family in 1850.)

I don't think the county clerks knew or cared about the differences in the name back in England or where ever they came from.

Thanks for your help and information.

Wynell
