Pat,

It would seem that your not alone in researching another Goolsby - Childress marriage! So far, how many Childress do you have record of who married Goolsby? And your Joseph Childress came from Albemarle and did not live in Amherst County at all then?

So far, I have correspondence and letters, from descendants who have a HENRY CHILDERS (shown as Childress in Amherst abstracts and original documents) who married a Goolsby, documentation from descendant, Virginia Hanks (see Childers-Childress Family Association website) - Another source, who had ABRAHAM CHILDRESS married to a SUSANNAH or SUSAN GOOLSBY, born 1723c, the third child named in the Will of Thomas Gooslby (aka Goldsby) in 1774, one source was: (Edgar Woods, Albemarle County in VA, Charlottesville, 1901, page 211) - See also, CARTER FORUM - Message 17406, Mark Childress, who claimed a HENRY CHILDRESS married SUSANNA GOOLSBY and was the brother of BENJAMIN CHILDRESS. I would assume he meant Benjamin Childress who left the 1775 Will, whose wife was ANN JOPLING (aka Joplin), I have an original copy of the Benjamin Childress will. I received no documentation from Mark on what his sources were as to his assumption that HENRY and BENJAMIN CHILDRESS were brothers. According to Mark and Gary Childress Series on the Childress-List (March 2005) they purported that their JOSEPH CHILDRESS was also the brother of BENJAMIN CHILDRESS, assuming they meant the Benjamin who amrried Ann Jopling.

I found it very intereseting that your JOSEPH CHILDRESS wife, SARAH, was married twice, I had also read from Mark and Gary Childress Series (Childress-List) that their JOSEPH CHILDRESS was married to SARAH and that she then married JAMES EDMONDSON. This has been proved to be in error. This SARAH was in fact was, SARAH DYER who married first, GEORGE HAYES of whom she had issue, she then married JAMES EDMONDSON of Amherst County, VA and had further children. One daughter of whom a Edmondson descendant named LUCRESHIA, married JOHN CHILDRESS who was born 1759 Albemarle Co, VA, migrated to Amherst Co. as a child. This is according to his deposition for a Rev. War pension in Knox Co, TN. It is also said that this JOHN married a Elizabeth Lindsay (Lindsey) of which had not been proven to my knowledge. JOHN CHILDRESS is in the Wilkes Co, NC Will of JAMES EDMONDSON as his son-in-law, 1792/3. JOHN migrated to Knox Co, TN where he died in 1848/9 per court records which can be seen on this forum: BETSY HINDS vx ROBERT CHILDRESS (both children of JOHN CHILDRESS, (born 1759, d.1848/9)

I am also corresponding with a Childress descendant whose ancestry is out of AMHERST CO, VA. And whose grandfather was a JOHN WESLEY CHILDRESS and buried in the family cemetery in Amherst CO, VA.

Please keep me posted, I am very interested in what you may find and we can compare notes! And I would really like to know more about your JOSEPH and his wife SARAH. Thank you for the info!

MaryJean
