Nope; not the author.
I'm the eldest son of each generation's eldest sons, since before the Revolutionary War. Our family line was the keeper of the Childress family Bible since before the Revolutionary
War. It was our line that was given the Childress family "walking stick" in 1775 - the one your oral histories undoubtedly mention, that was carved by the land-grant founder's son, and handed to our line in 1775 (and which still exists even in my time). We've been passing that walking stick, the oral histories from those first Childresses, down through our line ever since.
But no. I'm not the author you're thinking about.

What oral histories have managed to reach your time ?!
